The Sample Collection Server collects and encodes media from radio and television in the Panel Member's DMA.
An array of tuner cards capture each channel's audio and converts it into a digital stream. A processor converts all the streams into digital signature files. The Collection Server stores these files for a period of time so the system has a "look back" capability for delayed viewing and later studies.
The Collection Server uploads the digital signature files to IMMI central servers where they are compared to the signature files from all active panel members to determine media experiences.

Media not carried on cable or radio, like DVD's, Movies, Internet Media, etc, is uploaded directly from IMMI computers. These files are then converted to digital signature files, and sent to the central servers.
